RENEW EXISTS TO MAKE DISCIPLES WHO ARE RENEWED BY THE GOSPEL AND BECOME GOSPEL RENEWAL TO THE CITY

The first part of our mission is set by Jesus. We don’t need to be creative or over think it. “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit” (Matt 28:19-20). Renew exists to make disciples as Jesus commands. We are not here to produce people who “like” Jesus, but people who love him and will follow him as a disciple. Now how we actually do this and in what context is what makes Renew distinct. We are making disciples in Santa Monica (and in greater Los Angeles), through all the ways we uniquely experience and express Gospel renewal in this incredibly diverse, spiritual family.  As we grow together and become more like Jesus, we become Gospel renewal to Santa Monica and beyond. Our outreach and evangelism is not a program or a department. We are “salt" and “light". When we are full of Jesus, we taste different and shine different, and the world will notice.

WHAT IS A DISCIPLE @ RENEW?

A disciple at Renew is someone who follows Jesus and is renewed UP, ACROSS & OUT by the Gospel.

  • WE ARE TRANSFORMED FROM ENEMIES OF GOD TO CHILDREN OF GOD.

    DISCIPLES ARE BORN AGAIN THROUGH JESUS INTO AN ETERNAL, LOVING RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.

  • WE ARE TRANSFORMED FROM STRANGERS TO THE FAMILY OF GOD.

    DISCIPLES ARE A VITAL PART OF THE CHURCH, THE BODY OF CHRIST, WHERE THEY MATURE TOGETHER INTO JESUS.

  • WE ARE TRANSFORMED FROM BEING OF THE WORLD TO BEING SENT INTO THE WORLD AS SALT AND LIGHT.

    DISCIPLES ARE EMPOWERED AND COMMISSIONED TO MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, SON, AND SPIRIT.

HOW DO WE MAKE DISCIPLES @ RENEW

As mentioned above, Jesus said in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit”.  Jesus’ command provided instruction not just for 1st century disciples but disciples throughout all generations. This commandment implies that every follower (or disciple) of Jesus is also a disciple maker.

Most Christians probably have at least a basic understanding of what it means to be a disciple. For us at Renew, we’ve defined that as renewing relationship UP (God), ACROSS (family of God), and OUT (the world around us). However, most Christians don’t have a practical process of making disciples. How does a follower of Jesus help others follow Jesus?

At Renew, the journey to helping others follow Jesus is a four-part process, Engage, Establish, Equip and Empower. The following statements explain the why and what of each stage of that process.

  • Because everyone is important to God, we engage culture and community.

  • Because everyone will grow as our lives are built on Christ, we establish biblical foundations.

  • Because ministry is not only for full-time ministers, we equip believers to minister.

  • Because everyone is called to make disciples, we empower disciples to make disciples.
